Do infinitives function as nouns?

I am preparing for GMAT sentence correction using Mc Graw Hill's Grammar For The Utterly Confused and the answer to this true /false question is false.

i am refering to just the infinitive, for e.g "to run"

can some one please elaborate?

Hey there,
yes, infinitives do function as nouns.

1)they can be subjects as in:
To purchase the dog today would be a mistake.

2) Direct Objects:
The boys wanted to drive the family car to Bristol, Tennessee.

3)Predicate Nominatives:
His primary goal is to prepare for the exam.

4)Objects of the Preposition:
He was about to leave the room when the phone rang.

hope my reply is not late. I have just red your post XD

Yeah it's a fixed structure. To infinitive and a gerund can do what a noun can do somewhat.
