. It seem to be a misprint, but I cannot think what word is meant. 'Affliction'? . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Well, Mister Micawber,
At first I also thought it's probably misprinted. But after I've searched several scripts of this movie as well as listened to the soundtrack, I found the same spelling of 'irrediction'. Since this is adaptation from the story by F. Scott Fitzgerald written in 1920s, it is possible that either it's an old-fashioned language or biblical. Who are 'Zebuchar' and 'Beelzebub', anyway???
P.S. The story is about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be. |

. Yes, I know the story-- I even found the movie trailer on YouTube which includes the last half of your dialogue, as well as the script on line. Scott Fitzgerald's work is not so old that the word would disappear from the language by now. Fitzgerald (or the script writer, Eric Roth) more likely coined it as a bit of 'pompous evangelical healer' language.
In Christianity, 'Beelzebub' is another name for Satan or one of his top henchmen; I suppose that 'Zebuchar' is too. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |
