Please help me to point out a mistake in this following sentence:
The hardware of that computer was infected by some new viruses.
I would change "by" into "with". The matter is there's no "by" in choices offered as mistakes.

'By' and 'with' are both OK. I would choose 'hardware', since I think it should be 'software'-- but otherwise, I see no mistakes.

A thought now occurs to me: perhaps the test writer intended 'has been infected' instead of 'was infected'. Still, there is nothing wrong with either verb form.

Yes, I agree with you. "has been infected" may sound better, but there's nothing to tell us that "was infected" is wrong
