Hello I am new member. I've just come across a question Could explain to me this?

Roughly 100.000 years ago, during the last ice age, wolves migrated from Eurasia to the highlands of ---- is now Ethiophia.

a) that
b) where
c) what
d) which
e) who

Can I use which instead of what in the sentence if not why?

thanks in advance

'Ethiophia' is yet to introduce, therefore 'what' instead of 'which'. I am still learning Smile

We use 'what' to refer to the idea or thing which is yet to introduce in the sentence:

...what is now Ethiophia.

This is how 'which' is used:

...wolves migrated from Eurasia to Ethiophia which is truly a land of contrasts and extremes.

Can someone help me rephrase the above in grammatical terms please?

some teachers claim that according to english grammar rules we have to use WHAT but I insist that we can also use WHICH in the example
What do you think about my opinion?

using WHICH in this sentence would sound very odd, to me. I think the best option is really WHAT but I can't say why.
gray's explanation looks great.
one thing I know about WHICH/WHAT is the the first is used when you have more than one alternative. for example, you say "WHICH one is your pen?".
