I was married vs. I got married? #1 (permalink) Wed Jan 14, 2009 18:31 pm   I was married vs. I got married?

Hi, is there a difference between 'I was married four years ago' and 'I got married four years ago'? I would have thought that if you are still married you say 'I got married four years ago' which means you have been married for four years.

Thanks,
Torsten

Hi Torsten,

I would suggest that 'was married' describes a state or status and so 'I was married 4 years ago' could indicate that your status was a 'married' one at that time and doesn't necessarily indicate that you still are. 'I got married 4 years ago' indicates that's when you began your marriage.
