the usage of 'that' #1 (permalink) Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:40 am   the usage of 'that'

Hi guys,

a. It was very cold that I closed the window.
b. It was very cold so I closed the window.

I have two questions about the two sentences above:

1) Does a) make sense in any ways? Actually, I don't think so. How can 'that' be inserted into that position without 'so' before it?
2) If a) makes sense, do you think it has the same meaning as b)?

Thanks,
sweetpumpkin

1-- No, you cannot use 'that' there.
2-- 'A' does not make sense.

No, you cannot say that and consider it correct English.

MM, if I say "It was very cold so that I closed the window."

I think I can say that way. In this case, I can omit 'that', can't I?

Thanks,

OKay, let me say this.
You better don't open your window, it is cold and you can catch cold. This is it.

Almazonly, we are not looking for a different way of expressing this idea; we are working on the grammar of the given sentence.

It was very cold, so I closed the window
'That' should in fact not be used here; 'so that' sounds quite odd to me.

" 'So' is a coordinating conjunction indicating a response or reaction... 'So that' is used for a subordinate clause to show purpose or give an explanation."

You can read more if you download the PDF on the subject on THIS PAGE.
