Some questions about the passive? #1 (permalink) Wed Jan 21, 2009 7:18 am   Some questions about the passive?

Greetings:
Can someone explain the following passive sentences to me:

1) A film is put in the camera by her. (e.g., Why the "is"?)

2) The ball was kicked by the boy. (e.g., What is the grammatical label for "kicked" in this sentence?)

3) The piano can be played by him. (e.g., Why the "be"?)

Any information given is greatly appreciated.

.
1-- Singular 3rd person 'is' is in concord with the subject, 'a film'.
2-- past participle of the verb 'kick' used as the non-finite component of the passive verb phrase.
3-- passive infinitive used with an auxiliary verb.
.
