Hello everybody I'm new on this forum. I am American and being living in Italy for 20 years but I did all my school in the State. The reason I enter this forum is because I have been offer a job teaching Adult english as a second language. I don't have any experience in teaching and this is why I need to go back and review my english. Can anybody give me some advice. I have beginner, elementary and pre-elementary. These people are not interested in english grammar so much, what they want is be able to speak when they go on vacation.
bye bye. |
Your mistakes are so frequent and so strange that it's hard to believe you are actually American and went to school in America. Since your English is so bad, my advice would actually be not to accept the job, and leave it for someone whose English is better. You should really take a job that doesn't require good English. |

It is really hard to believe that an American even though he lives in Italy for 20 years could ever compose a letter in English with so many mistakes (doesn't give a damn to the language..?)
I think he is not alone in this category..we can guess there may be scores of people with this level of English accuracy..
Well said Jamie (K). This is the best advice given at the right time..a friend indeed is a friend in need..! _________________ Sahid59

Hi Ara,
Welcome to english-test.net and many thanks for your question. It's great to hear you have been offered a job as an English teacher. The most important thing for you is to try and put yourself into your students' shoes. What would you expect from a teacher if you were to learn English as a second language? How did you learn Italian?
Please tell me more about the kind of job you have been offered. Are the courses funded by a government agency or the students themselves?
Talk to you soon, Torsten _________________ Test Of English for International Communication TOEIC Preparation & TOEIC Vocabulary |

When you leave your country and start to speak other languages, believe me it happened. So instead of criticize the way I write, why don't you give me a hand?

Hi Ara,
So how many hours are you going to teach a day, how old are you students, how many students will there be in your classes and what materials is the school going to provide you with?
As for good grammar resources, I recommend you get a copy of Essential Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy as well as English Grammar Through Stories by Alan Townend.
In addition, you might want to purchase How to become an English teacher.
Let me know what you think. Grazie, Torsten _________________ Test Of English for International Communication TOEIC Preparation & TOEIC Vocabulary |

Thanks again Torsten
The materials that was given to me are these three books: For the first level “English for Life Beginning” by Tom Hutchinson The first level are adult from the age of 45-60 years old. Some have school English others nothing at all.
The second level is the same age but they’re able to make sentence although with difficult. They know their grammars so if you ask them to read, they are able to understand what they are reading, but if you just speak without writing on the blackboard, they are not used it to hearing English so they don’t understand. At that point they start asking why do you used that word instead of another….. For that group I was given the “English for Life Elementary” by Tom Hutchinson. For the third level the books is “English for Life Pre-Elementary” by Tom Hutchinson, they are from 25-50 years old. For these group I found this book useful, because they speak a good English a side from the pronunciation. They make mistake on preposition, irregular verb, the different with present continuous and verb that used the Gerund (ing).
Thank you Ara |
