I am confused between "at" and "for" in this following multiple-choice question because both "go at" and "go for" mean "attack"

A half-savage mongrel went ____ the tramp as the man approached the farm.
At against upon for

Please help me to work out the correct choice.

I think either "at" or "for" is fine in this case. "Go for" is a bit colloquial, I think.
