Hello Hadeer! I Think the main difference is that Present Perfect describes action which has just finished. For example, "I have written to you "Hello". And Present Perfect Progressive describes action which started in the past, lasts now and perhaps will continue some more time. For exemple, "I have been writing a letter to you for 5 minutes" I started writing 5 minutes ago, I'm writing it now and I'll write it some more minutes. Have you caught the idea? |

Dear Twins,   thanks alot for your answer concerning "the present perfect simple and the present perfect progressive".But dear, as you know, the present perfect simple may also mean(an action which may not finish now, it may finish in the future , right?), so , how can I distinguesh it from the latter one?. Please help me in understanding that... Best regard Hadeer |

hey
as a native speaker the only difference I see between the present perfect and the present perfect continuous is emphasis. The ppc emphasizes more the duration of the action than the action itself. O present perfect is related to the action itself. take these exemples:
I have lived in Canada. I have been living in Canada.
In the second sentence it's clear that I still live in Canada. But the first sentence is ambiguous because we can use the p perfect to talk about past action in which you don't have time reference or to talk about an action that started in the past and has a link to the present so in this case it can be understood that I lived once in Canada or I still live there, you get it? That's why when we use the p perfect to talk about an action that started in the past and continues in the present we usually use words such as: SINCE and FOR
I have lived in Canada since last year. I have lived in Canada for 3 years.
Now it's clear that the action has a link to the present. I can even use th pp continuous in both cases
I have been living in Canada since last year I have been living in canada for 3 years.
I hope this helps you. |

Hello Rafaelinrio,   How are you? I hope everything goes well. Thanks a lot for the explanation. I’ve got the idea. Now, I understand everything. So, the pp is concerned with the action itself while the ppc is concerned with the duration of that action. :?: :?: :?: |

Dear Rafaelinrio, Thank you very much for your quick reply and for your desire to help me any time I face a problem. :D Well, is it possible for you to explain the differences between “the past perfect continuous and the present perfect continuous?” with examples. By the way, I am a woman and not a man  with honour and respect Hadeer :D |

hey, sorry for calling you man, lol
anyways, the present perfect continuous as I explained before expresses an action that started in the past and continues until the present. In the past perfect continuous you have 2 sentences in the past but one of them was in the progressive form. In this we usually use the the past continuous instead of the past perfect continuous, check it out:
I had been studying when my girlfriend called me. I was studying when my girlfriend called me.
John had been traveling a lot before he started his new job.
When we finally decided to take a break, we had been working for 8 hours. When we finally decided to take a break, we had worked for 8 hours.
You see, as in the p perfect and p perfect continuous, the past perfect continuous emphasizes the duration of an action that was happening during some time in the past before another action. And once again as in the present perfect if you want to emphasize the duration of the action in the past you msut use the past perfect continuous, take a look:
I had studied when my girlfriend called me. I had been studying for 2 hours when my girlfriend called me. I was studying when my girlfriend called me.
In the fisrt sentence we have an idea that I studied and after that my girlfriend called me. In the second one it's clear that when she called me I was still studying and I emphasize that it had been for 2 hours. In the third I just mention that she called me when I was studying, during my study time, the duration of the action is not important.
Hope this helps you. |
