I think it can be with or of

"die from" denotes dying from external factors, for example, accident, crash, wound, etc.

"die of" denotes dying of a specific disease, such as cancer, smallpox, pneumonia, etc, or dying of lacking some minerals or mental disorder, e.g. starvation, grief

so, it's

die from an accident/a car crash/a wound

die of cancer/smallpox/pneumonia/starvation/grief
