Concerning the correct behaviour that one must have when queuing... #1 (permalink) Sun Jan 25, 2009 16:09 pm   Concerning the correct behaviour that one must have when queuing...

Hi All,
I have a question concerning the correct behaviour that one must have when queuing at the supermarket cash or at a office desk or in any other situation where you are in a queue.
Usually, it happens that someone courtesly asks you to let him move forward, because for example you are queuing at the supermarket cash and you have a shopping trolley full of stuff, while he/she has just one or two things, so he/she asks you to let him move forward in the queue. Well, in Italy in these situations we say "Prego", or "Prego, prego" that is the same word repeated twice. "Prego" literally means "Please". My question is, it is correct to say "Please" in this case? Or there is a better word/sentence?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tunele,

Let's be clear about who is talking to whom. If you are the one with a lot of shopping, you could say to the person behind you with just a few items: Please go ahead. If you are the one with a few items and want to go in front of the person with a lot of shopping, you would ask: Do you mind if I go first?

Thanks Alan,
So if I understood it's very similar to italian, for example if I was the one with a lof of shopping, I could just say "Please"
