How to use this forum? How to contact you?
Dear Mr. Torsten Daerr,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your encouragement, guidance and concern. In fact, I have done my best by taking many free interactive English tests and have studied their explanations given by Mr. Alan Townend, Mister Micawber, Amy, Linda, Conchita and many others. As a result, I have understood a lot of the basic English grammar since I joined the English-test.net. Of course, I also benefited from other English sources. In other words, there is a significant improvement in my English; that is, my present English is different from my former English. Therefore, I would also like to thank Mr. Alan Townend, Mister Micawber, Amy, Linda, Conchita and many others for providing their advice and assistance.
Not long ago, you recommended that I take at least three free interactive English tests a day (English lesson 35), so I have taken as many tests as I could. However, I apologize for failing to fulfil your requirement of at least three tests a day on October 2, 2009. Honestly, I could not manage on that particular day, and one problem I would like to highlight is that I am relying on the Internet shop to practice my English. Thus, please bear with me if the Internet system is down or if there are any problems due to unforeseen circumstances. Sad to say, I also do not have any computer because of my career reasons and not because of any financial problems.
Once again, I would like to thank you for all your support, and I look forward to receiving your future lessons. In conclusion, please let me know if your principle of taking at least three English test daily is uncompromisable.
Best wishes,
Bhikkhu1991a.
Note: I am open to suggestions, and all are welcome to proofread this letter. Thank you. |

Dear Torsten!
I have a question. Where are you from? Your accent sounds British to me but your location says EU. Does it stand for The United States? I'm quite curious!

Marina! You have something in common with my daughter, the name, which means the one who comes from the sea. I'm going to give you a piece o advice, even thou you haven't asked for: If you are considering learning English seriously you should avoid all those expressions such as U instead of you. I teach English here in Brazil and I always say to my students that, while using other language than your first one you should do you best in a way to give a good impression. When you go to a party you want to give a good impression wearing something nice and appropriated, think about using English as going to a big party, do your best ! |

can anyone please grade my toefl essay:
IN OUR TIME, SPECIALISTS OF ALL KINDS ARE HIGHLY OVERRATED. WE NEED MORE GENERALISTS- PEOPLE WHO CAN PROVIDE BROAD PROSPECTIVES
A specialist is a person who has a vast knowledge about a small area of a particular field and a generalist is a person who has a broader aspect of knowledge about a field. A generalist covers almost all the topics of a particular subject, but we cannot say that he is an expert. But a specialist is restricted to a particular aspect and we can call him the master of his subject. Whenever we talk about a specialist and a generalist, the specialist are kept a step ahead or as said in the heading are overrated because they are expected to be in greater demand compared to their depth of their knowledge.
This issue holds good in case of the medical field. For example, if there is case which is not that serious, the patient is mostly treated by the generalist itself. But what in case the patient has a Acute myocardial infarction or has a acute asthma attack. The generalist calls up to the ambulance and refers the patient to the specialist. May be because he does not have that much deep knowledge as well as the equipments required for the treatment of that critically ill patient.
If we take an example of a medical novel written by Dr. Thomas, who was a doctor in middle of the 19th century, he also accepts that most of the critically ill patients were referred to Portland hospital which was a super- specialty hospital. He also says that the hospital was well equipped and hence patient care was done comfortably.
When we see the software field, the companies prefer person who has a lot of experience because they think that if the person has a prior experience, they do not have to train them and henceforth saving time and money to be spent on their training. It is not restricted to the software field, whenever there is a vacancy in the newspaper or on internet, they ask for experience so that as soon as the person joins the institute he can start his work without wasting much time on the training.
Sometimes we fell that a generalist would be a better option because he has knowledge about all the aspects and can handle the situation in case of emergency. This holds good whether it in case of the medical field or in case of a software field. For example in case of the medical field, the generalist can be present anywhere in the world i.e. In the rural as well as in the urban areas. But the specialist can be present only in a well equipped hospital only. And most of the well-equipped hospital are present in the urban areas.
In some companies generalist refers to the person who has knowledge of the the fields, hence a single person can look after all the fields, in absence of others. But a specialist do not have knowledge about the other fields hence will be able to concentrate on other fields.
So, it is not true to say that the specialist are overrated everywhere. May be in some of the cases they might be overrated because of their depth of knowledge. But the generalist have also got same importance in the society because of their multispeciality skills.. |
