Sentence: We are discussing about the importance of doing a job in pipeline #1 (permalink) Fri Jan 30, 2009 18:32 pm   Sentence: We are discussing about the importance of doing a job in pipeline

If we were to do it, we would have to do it as a first class job.

We are discussing about the importance of doing a job in pipeline. Is this sentence correct if I want to use this it now with out knowing that the job will be done now or not. But it may have to be done in future(not sure if this is going to happen). So uncertainity in present and future but there are chances.

I think the verb form is good, but the ending needs a bit of a change:

If we were to do it, we would have to do a first class job.

Hi Micawber,

Thanks a lot for the reply and apologies for the late response from my end.

Thanks for confirming that the verb form is correct. However, can we use this verb form in such scenarios. All that I know about the usage of this verb form is in unreal conditions so I was thinking that this sentence can be used when we think/know that the job is not going to come at all. Please correct me if I am wrong.

But in my scenario, the job may come in future, there are still possibilities. Can we still use this verb form or simply use future tense like:

If we have to do this job, we will have to do a first class job.

It is fine here. It is not unreal, but hypothetical (= maybe or maybe not). Unreal conditions apply to the past (Conditional III): If we had done it, we would have done a first class job.
