I called the supervisor, as the message said.

Does this mean:

1-The message said to call the supervisor and I did.

2-I called the supervisor and after that there was a message sent or left or given which said that I called the supervisor. The content of the message was not an instuction to call the supervisor, but was the statement of a fact: I called the supervisor.

Depends on the context -

1)
This explains the action - actual call --

As soon as I opened my mailbox, I saw my colleague's message. And I called my supervisor as the message said.

2)
This is a description about the call --

Then I wrote to my colleague that I spoke with the supervisor. My colleague missed my message and came to my desk to remind me of the call. I told him that I called my supervisor as my message said.
