Past perfect confuse! #1 (permalink) Fri Feb 06, 2009 3:53 am   Past perfect confuse!

Hi there!

I've recently read this sentence:
"I had known him quite well, but we lost touch with each other when my company asked me to move to Ohio a few years ago."
I'm not sure if the use of past perfect is possible in this sentence. In my humble opinion, it sounds weird, but what do I know...
Could anyone please give an opinion?

Thank you very much, folks.

Hey, I wouldn't say that, I'd say "I knew him very well... or I used to know him very well....

I'd use the past perfect in this sentence if instead of BUT I had WHEN, like this:

"I had known him quite well when we lost touch with each other...."
