What does "Progress" mean? #1 (permalink) Sun Feb 08, 2009 13:58 pm   What does "Progress" mean?

Dear Sirs,

First, I' do like to say that this is, in my opinion, the best ESL site on the Internet.

Second, I'd like to understand the meaning of the 'Progress' percentual. It can be seen that it's not simply the ratio of "Correct answers" to "Questions answered".

Would you please put some light on the subject.

Best regards,
Augusto

I am too, clueless here Confused 698 out of 863 should be 80.88% and not 83.97%.

How to calculate a progress report? #4 (permalink) Tue Feb 17, 2009 14:33 pm   How to calculate a progress report?

Hello Augusto and Gray,

Please see a progress report of Efl Learner here:
http://www.english-test.net/progress_report/index.php?user=1343

In our progress report we count only the last result of each individual test (sort by date):

e.g.
User Efl Learner took 3 tests but one of them 2 times.
We use the latest result.

Progress report = (100% + 20%) / 2 = 60% -- correct

Progress report = (100% + 10% + 20%) / 3 = 43,33% -- incorrect

By using this formula you can arrive at 100% in your progress report.
Example: LucyGLV's Report

Many thanks

Thanks a lot. It means if I have to better the percentage score, I have to revisit the tests on which I scored poor. This is quite useful for tracking the true progress.

Thank you, Slava and Torsten.
Torsten, I have this problem. Somehow I am not able to connect the auxiliary 'does' with the verb and I end up mantaining the 's' on the verb.

How a learner is ranked in his or her progress? #8 (permalink) Tue Mar 17, 2009 6:02 am   How a learner is ranked in his or her progress?

Please tell me the "rule" for ranking a leaner. Is all kind of test ranged equally, I mean if doing 3/3 in listening will get more scores than that in elementary grammar, for example?

They're all ranked equally because the idea of the tests is not to assess a learner's current level of English but to encourage them to take the tests several times over a period of time. That way you can improve your English by learning new phrases and expressions. You also will learn how to ask questions and interact with native speakers and fellow learners.

Hi Torsten,
Thank you for your reply. However, sometimes I learn my score keeps unchanged after I have just done 3/3 correctly. For instance, I noticed my progress said Lephuoc is 708 of 6225. Then I continued to do an easy test in elementary exercise, hoping that I would get 699 out of 6xxx. But I was a little disappointed. Did the server update slowly?

Hi Torsten,
Me again! Is the time taking by learner considered? I mean if the more time the leaner takes for his or her exam, the less score he or she gets? Also, if learners see the text in listening exercise, will he get lower score?
