Subjunctive: He behaved as if he were a millionaire. #1 (permalink) Wed Feb 11, 2009 19:34 pm   Subjunctive: He behaved as if he were a millionaire.

Hello

When I use the subjunctive, I am not always sure which tense I have to use before and after the conjunction ''as if/as though''. Could you please tell me if these sentences are correct?

1) He behaves as if he had been a millionaire.

2) He behaved as if he were a millionaire.

3) He behaved as if he had been a millionaire.

Thank you in advance

If I am not mistaken, the second answer is correct, because it is a form of a verb that refers to actions that shows possibilities rather than facts.

Hi,

Sentence 1) would sound better as: He behaves as if he is a millionaire.
