That is a tough one. I should say: we don't use "any thing" often, usually "anything" is fine.
Example: She: "How do you like my new binoculars? Could you see the cows in the distance?" He: "I couldn't see anything, you idiot! You forgot to remove the lens caps!"
You could say "any thing" when you want to emphasize "thing", if there has been specific talk of a "thing" before.
Example: He: "What is that thing there in the water?" She "I don't see any thing; it's a person, you idiot! Let's help him!" "Thing" would here be accented in speech.
Perhaps there are other uses for "any thing" but I can't think of any. |
