it's short for `exempli gratia` and is likely to be originated from a Spanish word or Latin word.

It's for quick writing.

It stands for Latin "exempli gratia" which means "for the sake of example", loosely translated "to give an example". Hence it means the same as "for example". It is usually has a comma before and after: "the Trojan war could have been easily prevented by a Trojan tribute of, e.g., a hundred pounds of silver to the angry Greeks".
