Sentence: Express ideas in a formal way #1 (permalink) Tue Feb 17, 2009 0:12 am   Sentence: Express ideas in a formal way

Hi,

In a self-service coffee stall that sells coffee, juice, sweets...etc, I'd like to express some ideas in a formal way so I hang some notes on the wall. Do they sound nature and formal as follows?

1- To ask customers to keep silence: Please don't make noise! Is this different from 'Please keep silent!' ?
2- To ask customers to keep smiles on their faces: please wear a smile on your face!
3- To ask customer to queue and wait for serve: Please queue and wait for your turn!
4- Ask customers to pay before consuming: Please pay before cosuming!
5- Ask them to keep clean hyginen in the public: Please keep hygiene in the public!
6- Clean the table after consuming: Please clean the table after consuming!
7- Put rubish and remnants in the bin after consuming: Please put rubish and remnants in the bin after consuming! Thanks.
8- to indicate this is a selfservice coffee stall: Selfservice coffee stall. Should I call 'selfservice coffee shop' or 'selfservice coffee stall' ?

Could anyone correct me and give me some ideas of how I can express the ideas above in a more formal way?

I thank you very much

First: a self-service coffee stall does not require formality; in fact, it might be counterproductive. Friendliness is the tone to take (no exclamation points!), and several of your notices are inappropriate in an open society.

1- Not appropriate unless your patrons are school children.
2- Not appropriate at all; a smile is a personal affair.

3- 'Please queue for service'
4- 'Please pay first'

5- Inappropriate except for school children; otherwise, subsumed in #6 and #7.

6&7- 'Please clear your table and place waste in bins. Thanks'

8- Should I call 'self-service coffee shop' or 'self-service coffee stall' ? -- It depends on what it looks like. If it includes the area around the equipment counter, with perhaps a table and some chairs, then you could use 'shop'. A 'stall' usually has an attendant within. If it is just a table with an urn, cups, etc, then I think it is a 'self-service coffee counter'.

Thank you very much Mr.M for your reply. Could you give me some advice in case:

1- People are forced not to make noise since the coffee counter is located in side an office? Does it sound nature if call it "cafeteria"?

2, 3, 4 - OK, thanks.

5 - I indicate that for this sort of coffee counters I won't help clean the table. In case I am force to express the idea, how could I say, please ?

6,7- OK thanks.

8- It's an area of appx. square 40 metres in side an office for officers to take a break with coffee. Could you explain abit more about 'Stall' so that I'll figure out to name it? Thanks

Anna

8- It's an area of appx. square 40 metres in side an office for officers to take a break with coffee. Could you explain abit more about 'Stall' so that I'll figure out to name it? Mr. M, so #5 can be rephrased as I did above or "Keep public hygiene" or what? Just give me a bit more comments on that?

No, I assume it's for school children, Mr. M. So how can I express the idea so that it sounds nature?
