I have a message sitting in my Outbox since yesterday. When is it going to be sent? How long does it usually take for a message to move from an Outbox to a Sentbox?

It moves to the Sentbox when the addressee opens it.

Please inform me when it goes to Sentbox. Wink (kidding)

But the question is when talking about the future can we use 'goes'? If yes, why?

Coming back to the context, can't we say 'the outbox' and 'the sentbox' as we are referring to the exiting, particular and known concepts here?

Hi Torston..

It is a good news that you have just disclosed to us..

As you are aware, in 'intranet' environment any of the sent messages can be deleted by the sender before the addressee opens it.

Is the same possible here in our forum with our private messages..?

Waiting your technical reply/explanation.

We can use the if a question is about one box in particular, but I have asked a general question about any Outbox and Sentbox.

No, that question was specific to the english-test.net outbox and sentbox.

Hello Gray,

This is yet another very gray area. Wink

You can think in specific terms of the Outbox and the Sentbox which are connected with your particular account, or with some other specific account.

Someone else might think in terms of any one of the many Outboxes and Sentboxes to be found here, in which case that person would choose to use "a" rather than "the".

Of course, it might be theoretically possible to have one gigantic english-test.net Outbox and one gigantic english-test.net Sentbox for all "private" messages. However, it would be pretty unethical to offer a "private message" system if Member X's private message to Member Y were randomly accessible to any other member who happened to feel like being nosy. After all, then the private messages here wouldn't be private, would they?

Using 'the' doesn't make it gigantic Wink, but it does make the reference definite - the reference to the concept..not to the particular instance of it. That is the reason Torsten, too, used 'the'.

A related question:

I can understand why there's a policy that PM's can't be sent until one has made at least five posts here. But why does that policy also apply to being able to read one's own PM's? I just received my first PM here, and have no way to see it. Of course, presumably, I would then want to reply to it, and then.... Hrm, perhaps I just answered my own question! Wink
