"That" is used in a restrictive sense only, while "Which" can be used in both restrictive and nonrestrictive senses. However, many grammarians discourage the use of "which" in a restrictive sense so that there would be a clear distinction in the usage of "that" (i.e., restrictive) and "which" (i.e., nonrestrictive). _________________ The more we learn, the less we seem to know. |

'Which' and 'that' can be used for things: This is the car that I like or This is the car which I like. The word 'that' can be used for people. This is the man that I love. 'Which' is used only for things. However, having said that, in all the above sentences, the words 'that' and 'which' can be omitted. This is the car I like. This is the man I love.
