In this context "wonder" has the meaning of cuiosity as to the young man's help to the old lady. Also "wonder" in this situation may mean a slight doubt of somebody's ability to help you in doing something (or giving any kind of information).

Its original meaning is that of curiosity, but this curiosity is used here just as a polite phrase, it is ossified idom. It has come to mean just what Milanya says.

Hi Maryann, you " sound " as though you have learned all of your English in America.

Am I right in thinking this is so?.

Frankly speaking you've flattered me with your words about how I "sound", Mr. Williams Buttery. You appeared to be an Englishman living in Essen (Germany) (refering to the information in your first post here), right?
......

Best regards,

Maryann

Does anyone have an idea of(about?) where this guy has gone? :? He didn't show up for a long time as if he has forgotten his password. :(
