Say, my wife and I are travelling to Tomsville which is 100 miles from where I live. After covering 60 miles, my wife asks me, "Have we reached Tomsville yet?", can I say, "No. It's still 40 miles ahead."

Hi Daemon,

I think in that situation you would say: There are still 40 miles to go. 'Ahead' usually has the sense of 'coming up' as in: There are roadworks ahead.

Thanks Alan!

Is there any word that can replace 'ahead' here? Can away or far be used?

Yes, you can say: It is still 40 miles away; or It is 40 miles farther, but I think that Alan's version "40 miles to go" is better and sounds more natural.
