What should I use 'with your hand' or 'by your hand'? #1 (permalink) Thu Feb 26, 2009 11:39 am   What should I use 'with your hand' or 'by your hand'?

1 : "Press your forehead yourself"

2 : "Press your forehead by your right hand" OR "Press your forehead with your right hand"?

3 : "I'm going to buy white colour tiles from a tiles shop" correct?

4 : "Make at least one post on my forum" correct?

5 : "I'm already chatting fast with you" OR "I'm already chatting with you fast"

6 : "Search it in google" correct?

7 : "He sent me to his home" correct? OR "He sent me his home"?

8 : "Can I use 'occasionally' instead of 'sometimes' like "I phone her occasionally, I go there ocasionally"

9 : "He promised me rashly" correct?

10 : "Don't do anything rashly" AND "You sometimes do rash things" correc?

11 : "Try to become a frequent visitor or at least an occasion visitor to the forum" correct?
Thanks in advance

It seems to be correct: what is it you would like to know about this?
2 : "Press your forehead by your right hand" OR "Press your forehead with your right hand"?
With.

3 : "I'm going to buy white colour tiles from a tiles shop" correct?
Leave out "colour"; "tile shop" is better.

4 : "Make at least one post on my forum" correct?
Yes.

5 : "I'm already chatting fast with you" OR "I'm already chatting with you fast"
The first one is regular; the second lays very strong emphasis on "fast", perhaps you could use this in some less common situations.

6 : "Search it in google" correct?
I'd say yes: I guess idiom has not yet been firmly established in this case. Although perhaps "search for it in Google" is better. You could also say "search Google for it" or "search for it on Google".

7 : "He sent me to his home" correct? OR "He sent me his home"?
The first one is correct. Even better is "he sent me to his house".

8 : "Can I use 'occasionally' instead of 'sometimes' like "I phone her occasionally, I go there ocasionally"
Yes. But "sometimes" is more often than "occasionally".

9 : "He promised me rashly" correct?
Yes.

10 : "Don't do anything rashly" AND "You sometimes do rash things" correc?
Yes, both are correct.

11 : "Try to become a frequent visitor or at least an occasion visitor to the forum" correct?
No: occasional visitor.

Doing something with your hand is regular; doing it by your hand is old-fashioned or idiomatic. To do something "by hand" means you do it with your own hands, as opposed to with some sort of device.
