Describe the specific difficulties in English pronunciation met by a group of learners known to you.
This is what I have come up with for this question.
The problems for learners of English are mostly related to the differences between their language and English. Since the two languages belong to two different linguistic families, there are a lot of differences in terms of syntax and word formation, which give rise to a lot of common errors produced by the students . |

For making my pronunciation better I'm watching films in english and listening radio. The most curious thing is when I am listening British films or radio my accent is getting more british and vice versa when american's. _________________ We are what we repeatedly do. |

What about punctuation and spelling mistakes? Is that way for improving your English? I'm not quite sure!

Sentence structure and spelling seem to be the biggest errors that I see on the Forum.
Writing " I " as " i " being the most common. _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

Yes, and writing "english" instead of "English" is also a huge problem. |

I would say, they should have a computer program to automatically correct "i" and "english" to "I" and "English". :)

Hello Bill and Jamie,
As you are native speakers, especially Jamie is a linguistics professor, I'd like to ask you a question: How many English words can a US/UK highschool student command? I mean to say how many words they can recongize, read and use properly. In China, about 4,000 words are required for a college student to pass a test called CET4. But even though we have passed through this examination with high scores, I find it is still very hard for us to communicate with native speakers. So, I think the certification of CET band-4 is useless. What Jamie used to say to me are right, he suggested that I should read alot of material and absorb alot of natural English.(And I am doing exactly what he suggested me to do now.) By the way, the greatest obstacle of mine to improve my poor English is that I rarely have opportunities to utilize the vocabulary I learnt.
Best regards, Shi Weiqiang
