Hello,

This sentence is to be completed in a cloze test:
This job will give you the ....................... to travel abroad frequently.
a) possibility, b) offer), c) opportunity, d) probability.

I know that C is fine - but why is A wrong here? Please, explain.

Regards!
Raf

"Possibility" simply means that something can happen. "Opportunity" is a possibility that brings an advantage with it.

Does it mean that "opportunity" has a positive meaning (it is a possibility to do something good), while "possibility" is neutral?

No, because a criminal can see an opportunity to commit a crime. That means he sees that it's possible for him to commit a crime and that he will receive some advantage from it. However, the situation is quite negative for the crime victim.
