Choose one to complete the sentence

"The news of his sister's death came as a(n)______ shock to him."

A. utter B. entire C. Extreme D. great

I lean towards choice A and D . However , it's really a difficulty to distinguish between them when both of them are used to emphasize bad feeling in some cases .

Thanks for every help in advance
