Hello friends,

Thank you Alan for such a great story about money! I enjoyed reading it and learned some new phrases and words.
I think that all world is spinning around money. As the topic says, everything costs us. The Russian proverb which Yuri provided us with {"Don't have 100 rubles but have 100 friends"} doesn't appeal to me. In my case, I would prefer to have 90 rubles in my pocket and one good, reliable friend:}. That is just because I don't need to have a lot of friends to feed my social needs. But I need to have 90 rubles in the pocket to get what I want. Well, reading is my passion and books are very expensive nowadays.:}
Have a nice day everybody!

Hi, Alan

Thank you very much for such an intresting newsletter. I enjoyed the story about money.
When I read your article I thought that sometimes a word of encouragement and act of kindness costs more than gold.

Thank you so much!

Hi Alan,

Recently, I received an e-mail lesson with a text about finance (it’s called: It's going to cost you! (English essay 4)), and I’ve got some questions regarding the text:

I suppose if the old chap simply can't quench his thirsty, he probably leaves the wheelbarrow as well!
– what does exactly this sentence mean?

Of course it was the Chinese who really got things started as far as actual money was concerned when the rest of us were still running around with boxes of eggs and handfuls of carrots if we wanted to acquire something we didn't have.

–I can understand the phrase “as far as I’m concerned”, but what does "as far as actual money was concerned" mean?

-What does “to get things started mean”?

I would really appreciate it if you could reply to me.

Cheers,

Dmitry

Hi,

I am talking in this piece about the old system of exchanging one type of goods for another type rather than for money. The old man takes his vegetables to the public house in a wheelbarrow to pay for his drinks and sometimes in order to quench (satisfy) his thirst he leaves the wheelbarrow as well to pay for the extra drinks.

'As far as actual money was concerned' means when we are talking about 'real' money - notes and coins.

'To get things started' means to invent, create for the first time.

I hope that clarifies,

Alan

Alan, thanks a lot.

It helped indeed. But could you provide more examples when "As far as something is/was concerned" is used?

Thanks again.

Hi,

For example: It's going to be an expensive holiday but as far as the travel costs are concerned, we are lucky because we get 50% off our air flight.

This suggests 'when we consider the cost of travelling/when we take the travel costs into consideration'.

Any good?

Alan
