Both sentences have the same meaning."would rather" is a combination of words with the meaning "prefer to".

I can suggest you some examples how they are used,which prepositions they are followed by:

1.I prefer tea to coffee.
2.She'd rather die than give a speech.

Does "would rather" denote upcoming action? And "prefer" is used to express liking?

Both of them express liking,preference.
