What does 'learn the hard way' mean? #1 (permalink) Tue Mar 10, 2009 12:33 pm   What does 'learn the hard way' mean?

Hello everyone,

I'd like to know what learn does hard way mean in the sentence below means:

If they do this ,they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within
a budget.

To me, it sounds: If they do this, they will be taught a lesson that speeding must be done within a budget.

Please tell me what the author intended to mean and if I understand the sentence correctly? Many thanks.

:)

"Learn the hard way" means that one has to learn through bitter experience. Thus, your given sentence will look like this:

If they do this, they will learn through bitter experience that spending must be done within
a budget.
