I come up with meaning of each word ... then it is easy to choose correct one.

(a) careless - negative of careful
(b) carefree - free from troubles (relax state)
(c) caring - look after
(d) careful - cautious

The term 'a lot' is always two words. It's a common error to run them into one, but it is never correct to do so.

It usually means he is caring towards others, but it depends on the rest of the sentence.
'He is caring' or 'He is a caring person.' refers to being kind and caring towards others generally.
'He is caring for his sick mother' refers to looking after someone else.
'He is caring for himself.' refers to self-care.
