But that would change the word order, wouldn't it?

That slipped through my eyes Wink Anyway, I have one more question then -- what is the difference between these two if there is any --

1) He stays home the whole day.

2) He stays home throughout the day.

I love this discussion.

Honestly, I am ashamed to say that I am unsure which of our suggestions is a preposition. That was the original question. LOL.

1) He stays home the whole day.

2) He stays home throughout the day.

I think the first gives a fixed amount of time, whereas the second doesn't give that suggestion, merely most of the day.

I looked it up. during and throughout are prepositions, whole is an adjective.

Thanks for your input Daemon99.

I work only from my vocabulary memory and the " feel " of the sentence.

I am at US now. Even though u think u suggest the better answer I never heard such phrase during the day. So u r wrong. The answer is correct if u use whole day or all day.

Hi Lephuoc,

Just for the record I would like to agree that 'during the day' is perfectly acceptable. As used here the suggestion is that something else happens at other times as in: During the day he stays at home and at night he goes out.
