Infinity, I don't know, but I would say,
" What I had intended, was to "
" What I intended was, to " or, better still,
" My intention was to,"
Please take note of the comma. _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

Hey Kitosdad,
Could you please clarify the usage of the commas in your sentences?
Thanks |

How is it different from -- "I was intent at ...ing"?
For example --
1) I was intent at becoming strongest of them all.
2) My intention was to become strongest of them all.
3) What I intended was to become strongest of them all. _________________ First lesson - English, not english. I, not i. ~A student of English |

Hello again SkiIucK, the commas would be used to signify a pause in the conversation, and for added emphasis on what was to be said next.
Intonation can only be simulated in text by commas, question and exclamation marks.
I am not a teacher, but that is my interpretation in the use of commas.
" I was going to say that, but he said it first."
" I was going to say that, but, he said it first." _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

Gray, All give the same meaning, but the comma does alter the "mood" of the sentence.
1) I was intent at becoming strongest of them all.
2) My intention was,................. to become strongest of them all.
3) What I intended,.................. was to become strongest of them all. _________________ _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

The usage of commas is a complicated issue. They may either serve a syntactic purpose or represent a physical pause in speaking. Using a comma just for a pause is in most cases not allowed as a motivation on its own, without syntax' dictating its placement at the same spot. But in some cases it is. However, much of it is idiom. It is too much to explain in a few lines, perhaps those interested could look it up in a dictionary. Even so, opinions may diverge on some commas. |
