Correct answer: (d) reaches a river

Your answer was: incorrect
After a few minutes he attains a river.

Please tell me why attains in this sentence is not proper?

because TO ATTAIN means almost the same as TO ACHIEVE, so you may attain your diploma or goal or an objective.
TO REACH connotes movement and getting to a particular place in space or time.
