" According to the old legend" is the only one that really fits the sentence in that construction. _________________ If you need me, I'm here. |

Xiao Shi, A small correction -- due to.
Hello all,
I know these are not replacements for 'according to' but are these correct --
1) If the old legend is to be believed, Romulus was the founder of Rome.
2) If we go by the the old legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome. _________________ First lesson - English, not english. I, not i. ~A student of English |

Good morning Gray, I hope all is well with you.
1) If the (old) legend is to be believed, Romulus was the founder of Rome.
1) Is an acceptable construction.( Don't think old is required. Legends are old.)
2) If we go by the the old legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome.
2) Makes sense, but if I may suggest ... " If we are to believe the legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome ". _________________ If you need me, I'm here. |
