Hi everybody, How do you read "1500s". And "1950s", is it nineteen fiftys or the fiftys. Also, can we use "1994s". If your answer is yes, how should I read it.
Thanks, Manal |
As Milanya stated, 1500's is read as 'fifteen hundreds'.
As for 1950's, if you include the 19, read it as the ' nineteen fifty's '.
You will see '50s, without the 19, which is read as 'the fifty's'.
No, you cannot say '1994s', because 1994 is just one year, not a span of years. It's specifically limited to one single year. You would just have to read it as 'nineteen ninety four'.
'The 1500s' refer to a span of years, anytime between 1500-1599. Correspondingly, the '50s are a span of years from 1950-1959. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

Hi Manal
The year 1500 would normally be pronounced as "fifteen hundred", and yes, the year 1905 would be generally be pronounced as "nineteen oh five".

As a rule, it is read two thousand (no -s- at the end). It is either the year two thousand or two thousand dollars. _________________ con·text - The part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning. |
