Though many a great leaders through their endevours have brought about changes in life of people around the world bt none so like 'Mahatma Gandhi'. The name 'Mahatma' itself potrays the great love and respect he commanded from the people, it means a 'Great Soul'

The real name of Mahatma Gandhi was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was the son of a magistrate in Porbander, Gujrat. His experience in SouthAfrica led him to work against the Aparthied in South Africa, it gave inspiration and a sense of belief to the people of South Africa to fight against repression.

During his years in South Arica he formulated and consolidated on his philosophy of Non Voilence and 'Satyagrah'. His non-voilent means won him respect both among his peers and among his critics.

His contribution to the Indian Freedom Struggle can be understood by the fact that he was bestowed with the title of 'Father of the Nation'. He was probably the first grass root level leader to enjoy such wide spread support.

His work for the poor farmers and his role as their leader in a protest against the british dye merchans first brought him to light. He gave a sense of direction to the Freedom Struggle and was a major force in making it a mass movement. Movements like the Dandi March and Non Cooperation Movement led to the undermining of the British Rule.

His work for social causes is well documented. He tried to rid thefragmented indian society of ills like 'Caste System' ,'Dowry System' among others. His desire to work for the upliftment of the suppresed people was instumental for special provisions for Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes and Other Backward Classes in the Indian Constitution.

Also his work for Inter-religion harmony had helped in stopping further fragmentation of the Indian Society and the Union of India especially during the Partition of India.

In all the present economic devlopment and social advances in India can be attributed to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and his Ideals. To his day the Union of India is directed by his vision and thoughts.
