Hi Daemon,
Sentence (1) is all right but it needs to be related to a main clause: I said I would be ... Sentence (2) is fine.
You could be either a teacher or a student if you are taking a course in something.

What I meant was, if I was taking a course, would I be attending the course to learn something or to teach something? _________________ Non-native speaker of English

That would not normally be understood to mean that you are teaching the course.
