kind vs. kinds (What kind of facilities are... vs What kind of food is...)

Hi,

I have one question about 'kind'.

1) What kind of facilities are there in the hotel?
2) What kind of food is there for breakfast?

If 1) is right, I think 2) could use 'are' instead of 'is'. I cannot explain the grammar, but I think- there should be a lot of facilities and many kinds of food for breakfast in a hotel- so 2) could use 'are'.

I think you will hear these, but I think #1 should be corrected to 'kinds' in careful writing. #2 is right because 'kind' is singular and 'food' is uncountable-- so both grammatical concord and concord of proximity apply to the singular verb. These are unimpeachable:

1) What kinds of facilities are there in the hotel?
2) What kind of food is there for breakfast?
1a) What kind of facility is there in the hotel?
2a) What kinds of food(s) are there for breakfast?
