If you say, "I am being an engineer," it means that you are temporarily pretending to be an engineer.
If engineering is really your profession, you would have to say, "I am an engineer." |

I am being an engineer doesn't always mean that you are not actually an engineer, does it? _________________ Non-native speaker of English

It never means that you are actually an engineer. If that is your permanent or long-term profession, you need to use the simple present tense. |

I can think of a situation where an engineer can say that. I could be wrong though. :)
Say, you are an electrical engineer good at fixing electrical problems. You go to a party with your wife. Everyone's enjoying the party just when the lights go off. People are disappointed. You go to the main supply and start fixing the problem. Your wife is a little pissed off that you are doing that in the party. She asks you, "Honey! What are you doing?" You smile and say, "I am just being an engineer." _________________ Non-native speaker of English

Yes, in that case it's possible, but he's really saying, "I'm just displaying my professional deformity." It's quite a different situation.
Another example: If you have a professor who's kind of crazy, and he is behaving in his typical crazy way, people might say, "He's just being Professor Schnozzledorfer," or whatever his name is. |
