But as you mentioned, Americans use 'absolutely' more frequently than 'definitely'.
Actually, that is not what I said. I was comparing the British frequency of use of "absolutely" to the American use of "absolutely".

If the British and American corpora are to be believed, then we Americans also use the word "definitely" about 5 times more often than the British do. In other words, it seems that people in the US use both "definitely" and "absolutely" much more often than the British do.

Hi ESL,

I'm fascinated by your mathematics - 5 times more? How do you reckon that?

Hello you two,

You can do the searches yourselves if you're interested in the numbers. The sites are handy if you want to see examples of usage in context. I often use the BNC (among other things) for further input if I run into a British usage that I'm not familiar with.
Here are the links:

Thanks for that - I am fully aware of the BNC. I think you've missed my point, ESL But then, no matter.

Alan

By the way ESL, you style yourself as an expert. Why not tell us something about your background? We always like to know a bit about our contributors, especially if they are native speakers.

Hi All,

To get back to the topic, I would choose the words I have heard in practice over the words which are there in the dictionary. I am pretty sure that is how the language works or may be that is how it should Smile.
