You can do the searches yourselves if you're interested in the numbers. The sites are handy if you want to see examples of usage in context. I often use the BNC (among other things) for further input if I run into a British usage that I'm not familiar with.

To get back to the topic, I would choose the words I have heard in practice over the words which are there in the dictionary. I am pretty sure that is how the language works or may be that is how it should .
