Hello everyone,i was reading through a topic posted on our forum regarding the correct usage of prepositions. the sentence goes like this "go down arch street two blocks and turn right at kings street.

"two blocks" is used with regard to the distance between two points. I understand that this method of reference is used in american english quite a lot. What i would like to know is can "two blocks" be replaced by for example a numerical value(100 yards).if so kindly rephrase the sentence with a suitable reference of measure.

In fact i tried a few myself but it sounds not alright
"go down arch street for 100 yards trun left at..........

thank you in advance

.
You can put any measure you like into the sentence; in the countryside, it would be 'go 2 miles and turn left', but it is pointless for either you or your listener to try to estimate meters or yards in a city which is clearly divided into blocks.

Another problem is that not all city blocks are of a standardized length, even within the same city.

Thus, as Mister Micawber pointed out, just use 'blocks' and you're accurate regardless of their length.
