I encountered statement as below in gmat.. Which one is correct. Any rule when to use "not only but also" or "and" .
He is both smart and intelligent.
He is not only smart but also intelligent.

Both are OK. Don't think there is any rule concerning when to use the longer one.

The first would be the most commonly used, I'd think.

"not only but also" makes the sentence sound more interesting. It's not only for the previous purpose but also to emphasize the aspects listed in your sentences.
