1) For over 10 years, from the summer of 1980 to the winter of 1990, he spent his time looking for her.
2) For over 10 years, from the summer of 1980 to the winter of 1990, he had spent his time looking for her.


Can someone please tell me which of the above sentences is grammatically correct?

The first one would be correct because it refers to a finished period of time in the past.

As far as I know #2 should be followed by smth that happened after that.
