Postponement.:-To delay until a future time; put off; to subordinate.
It relates exactly to the old saying, " Never put off until tomorrow, that which you can do today ".
And I am referring directly to YOU.!

You, the very people who tell us, hand on heart, " I do so want to become proficient in English ".

" I don't have time ", is the oldest excuse in the world. Five minutes is all you need to learn the list of Personal Pronouns. How long it takes to digest them, and form each one into fictional sentences is another matter, but you can do that in your head whilst working.

In actual fact, not having time is possibly a far better way to really learn, because you are not swatting, merely learning a very small amount and repeatedly going over this, thereby becoming perfect in this one thing. Each five minutes in yet another brick added to the wall that you are building, building solidly and surely, and confidently.

Even learning to spell a long word, one that usually gives you problems, will become much easier if you only take ONE MINUTE to write it down, and carry it around with you, referring to it every time you have a spare moment in your " oh so busy day ".

Surely better than an hours cramming over a multitude of things, and then becoming frustrated by only being able to recall some of them with certainty.

So please, don't use that excuse around me. How is it that you can recall all of the lyrics to the latest hit, yet cannot conjugate an English very without lots of head-scratching ?.

You do have time.! I've proven it to you. Read and practice constantly, even if it is only one sentence .... you've taken another step forward.

The postponement of the Rotary meeting caused much consternation.
Maybe we can get something done if the rain will let up and we can (hence) avoid another postponement of the game.

Another word that might work with Kitosdad's thread-opening post is "procrastinate" or its cousins "procrastination", "procrastinating" and "procrastinator" (or is it an -er suffix? I've never checked.)

I don't like to procrastinate, but this stuff is so hard to learn!
Procrastinating is my way of showing apathy.
Procrastination is an enemy of action.
Jim's a procrastinator: he always puts off that which he should do now.

Rage, rage against procrastinating in your English studies!

And not to forget the good old saying,

Procrastination is the thief of time

I never put off things I love to do (learning English is one of 'em). But there are certain things that I usually postpone, like working out. I have put on weight these days and I need to burn off a few calories. Smile

Hi guys, I do not disagree with you that I could have used more sophisticated examples, but my objective is to introduce our non-native speakers to words that they may encounter in their day to day learning.

They will need to refer to a good dictionary for the more complex words in the English language.

You did a good job of discussing the definition and application of "postponement". I simply wanted to introduce one of its cousins, "procrastination".

It's all good, my man!
