Can someone please explain me the usage of phrase "in that".

Here's one example: Such klin technology is said to have synergistic effects in that it allows the utilisation of organic waste for fuel.

Thanks

My dictionary does know this word (klin), but it knows the word kiln - a furnace or oven for burning, baking, or drying something, esp. one for firing pottery, calcining limestone, or baking bricks.

Here's another example:

An increased physical density of the store creates perceptions of confinement and crowding. These perceptions in turn cause shoppers to modify their shopping strategies IN THAT they reduce the time spent shopping, buy fewer items and alter their use of in-store information.

My first assumption still applies. For example is the implied contention.

He / She is giving examples as to how overcrowding has a direct effect on the stores sales.
