US News & World Report has listed 10 products and services that are selling better than ever in the United States during this recession:

3. Romance novels, science fiction and humor books
4. Condoms
5. Résumé editing
6. Public universities
7. Chocolate
8. McDonald's

It is interesting, (and relevant), that there are twice as many "escapism" items as there are "practical". I count 6.5 of these as "escapism": 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, and half a point for 1, as it actually fulfills both categories.

A lot of the items were things I would have guessed. I knew that Hollywood boomed during the Great Depression, because everybody had a dime to go to the movies with, even if they didn't have money for other things.

What I was surprised not to see was alcohol. A stockbroker told me that shares of Anheuser-Busch and other brewers do better in bad economic times than in good ones.

Actually, Jamie, I did hear a news report (think it was on NPR) the other day discussing how alcohol sales have gone up, and traditionally do go up in hard times.

So, yeah, I'm surprised it's not on the list also.

Not sure if it was the same report or not, but there was also a feature on the increase of McDonald's sales, with everybody going on about how cheap the food is, and how they could save money by eating at McDonald's.

Which I thought was rather stupid. If you're trying to save money, stop eating out altogether. Just because it's the cheapest fast food, doesn't mean it's cheaper than cooking at home.

That's precisely why I classified Mickey D's as an "escapist" pursuit, rather than "practical". Smile
