Right-hand drives in the US? #1 (permalink) Mon Apr 06, 2009 18:54 pm   Right-hand drives in the US?

Hi, I just noticed that in one scene in 'Once Upon a Time in American' there is a car driving by that has its steering wheel on the right hand side. Was that just a car exported from England?

Thanks,
Torsten

There are a limited number of them. For example, most of the small U.S. Postal service used by mailmen are right hand drives, so the driver doesn't have to reach across the seat to put the mail in the boxes.

I know of one rural postal delivery employee (these are subcontractors to the U.S. Postal Service, and must supply their own vehicle) who actually special ordered a right hand drive Subaru to make his life as a mailman much easier.

But by and large, yeah, any right hand drive in the U.S. is probably some kind of import.

However, even cars imported from England here have left-hand drive. This means that if it wasn't a postal vehicle, or something similar, then the owner probably imported it directly from England. It makes no sense from a safety point of view, but occasionally an eccentric will do it.

The Subaru (I think it was a Subaru) belonged to my college roommate's dad. I know it was a special order, but I have no idea if it was imported or not. This was many a year ago.

What's this business with substituting you for the letter "u"? I try to edit my previous post, and it shows I typed US with periods, but displays you.S for some odd reason...

I'm guessing this is some kind of forum substitution to try and clean up people who post in chat lingo? It's highly annoying. I can't even type u without it coverting to y-o-u.

Oh for God's sake..that is stupid.

Hi Skrej and Jamie,

Thanks for your explanations. Why do you think they used a right-hand drive in the movie 'Once upon a time in America'?

I can't say, as I've never seen the movie. Maybe one of the characters was a Brit living in America?

Sometimes rich people do odd things just to show that they have more money than common sense. Maybe it was some eccentric rich guy in the movie?

Guess I'll have to watch it and see.

I'm with Skrej on that one. I haven't seen the movie, but my guess would be that the right-hand drive is meant to show that some guy is rich and eccentric.
